FAQ

Here are some answers to Frequently Asked Questions.

Recording fire stopping
Passive Fire Protection?

Passive Fire Protection is the combination of fire resistant materials with the constructional fabric of the building to create an air-tight and sealed structure. Such as sealing any service, opening or hole penetrating a compartment wall, floor or ceiling. This prevents the spread of flame, smoke and heat throughout the building.

Compartmentation?

Buildings are split into confined zones with set resistances (in minutes i.e 30/60/90/120 minute resistance). By creating a fire resistant obstacle (wall, floor, fire stopping, fire door) it will impede the impact and spread of the flame and smoke will have on a building. These zones are referred to as Compartmentation, the most common example is the use of a riser cupboard to transport services vertically throughout a building. Risers are designed to achieve a set fire resistance depending on its fire strategy to which if a fire did occur within the fire would not leave that riser until that resistance has been met.

So how does Fire Stopping work?

It is vital that in all areas of compartmentation adequate and suitable protection is afforded to any imperfections, fit or openings in the constructional fabric (e.g. holes in walls and floors). This can be via ‘Fire Stopping which is designed to fill that hole with proven fire resisting materials that will last the fire duration depending on its installation specifications and requirements.

Accredited Installer?

Our accreditation bodies ensures that we are using heavily tested and certified products for our installs of which we only use Nullifire. This gives clients peace of mind that the products they are installed meet regulations and can actually provide a level of fire protection for their building. With plenty of evidence to reinforce this point. It’s recommended in page 10 of the Approved Document B to use a Third-Party Accredtied installer. So make the responsible decision and use Evolutions Fire Protection for all your fire stopping needs.

What Relevance is that for me?

If you are involved in selection of fire protection remedials, at any level, then you share the liability for its usefulness and its ability to function when it’s needed in fire, and this liability will still be there in the event of a court case.

Why is it Important?

Passive Fire Protection is a legal requirement. It’s sole purpose is to
protect occupants and the structure of the building in the event of a fire.
Which will give the fire brigade as much time as possible to put fires out.

As defined in the Approved Document B;

“If a fire separating element is to be effective, every joint and imperfection of fit, or opening to allow services to pass through the element, should be adequately protected by sealing or FireStopping so that the fire resistance of the element is not impaired”

Section 10.2 Approved Document B (fire safety) Vol.2 2010
